Beyond Ice

The Story Behind the Music

The Arctic is changing like never before. Scientific data shows the shifts, and the people on the ground bear witness. The new reality is giving rise to both concern and hope. Look at the ice sculpture; touch it, its evocation of Arctic ice swept away by a swell of the water, the weather. The images that surface tell of a diversity of landscapes and living things in the Arctic. Here is a world that draws on its heritage to open up to its future.

A Glimpse

This project hinged not only on musical composition, but on sound design. Javier Asencio used the sound of ice cracking from the North Pole, recorded by the National Film Board, processing them to create harmonic textures that were integrated into the score. Because the physical experience and sound spatialization were key, he chose to use a non-standard 9.1 system to deliver a fully immersive experience—creating, as artistic director Étienne Paquette noted, “a window by which you see another Arctic, beyond the ice.”
