Morrice and Liman in the company of Matisse

Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec

This exhibition, organized and presented by the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, offers a unique dialogue between the founding painters of Canadian modern art, James Wilson Morrice (1865–1924) and John Lyman (1886–1967)— a kind of posthumous meeting of two Montréal artists, who have in common that they met Henri Matisse.

The museum commissioned the designer of interactive installations Étienne Paquette (Mégaphone, Porteurs de lumière, Beyond the Ice) to produce two videos that would be the centre of the exhibition. Asencio’s mission was to create music and to design sound that would come out of the screens to fill the whole space, in order to bring the surrounding canvases to life.
